- Révision de la Grande Coupure européenne : analyse comparée des dynamiques évolutives et de la diversité entre petits et grands mammifères herbivores (Projet financé par le Fond National Suisse)
Juste avant la limite entre l’Éocène et Oligocène, il y a près de 34 millions d’années, le détroit de Turgaï qui séparait l’Europe de l’Asie va subitement s’assécher, entraînant la création de nouveaux ponts terrestres. Ce phénomène est du à une baisse générale du niveau des océans et de la température, une forte accentuation du contraste saisonnier ainsi que l’apparition d’une calotte glaciaire au pôle sud. L’histoire des mammifères terrestres connait alors un bouleversement drastique à l’échelle de l’Eurasie connu sous le nom de Grande Coupure. Cet évènement est particulièrement bien documenté en Europe de l’Ouest. Cependant, à la lumière de récentes découvertes, la chronologie des invasions de mammifères est remise en question, certains groupes apparaissant dès la fin de l’Eocène déjà en Europe de l’Est. Ce projet vise à réétudier la Grande Coupure à l’échelle de l’Europe en précisant son cadre chronologique et son impact sur l’histoire évolutive et la biodiversité des mammifères.
- Evolution et diversité des rongeurs de l’Oligo-Miocène de Mongolie (Projet financé par le Fonds Autrichien pour les Sciences)
La plus grande partie de l’Asie centrale est aujourd’hui une zone désertique. Toutefois, il n’en a pas toujours été ainsi. Depuis les premières explorations menées dans les années 1920, la région est connue pour sa richesse en fossiles, et notamment en mammifères fossiles qui illustre par le passé un environnement très différent des déserts actuels. Si ces premières explorations ont permis la découverte d’un bon nombre de fossiles de grande taille, la microfaune (notamment les petits mammifères fossiles) restait mal connue. Dans le cadre d’une mission conjointe de l’Autriche et de la Mongolie, de nouvelles études ont été menées dans le centre de la Mongolie permettant la découverte de nombreux fossiles de rongeurs. L’étude de ces spécimens permet une meilleur compréhension de l’évolution du climat en Asie centrale jusqu’à la situation actuelle.
